What Is Candle Sand?

Candle sand — also sold as candle powder, candle pearls, pearled candles or sand wax — is a granulated, plant-based candle wax that you pour into any heat-resistant container and light with a separate wick. Unlike a moulded candle, it takes the shape of whatever vessel you choose, leaves no wax stuck to the glass, and can be reused again and again.

How does candle sand work?

Candle sand works in three steps, with no melting, no moulds and no equipment:

1. Choose a container. Any non-flammable, heat-resistant vessel with a diameter of at least 8 cm — a glass bowl, a ceramic dish, a teacup, a vintage tin.
2. Pour the sand. Fill the vessel to the depth you want and push a wick into the granules, leaving roughly 0.5 cm of wick exposed.
3. Light it. The wax immediately around the wick melts and burns; the rest of the granules stay loose. Use one wick for a small vessel, or several wicks side by side for a wide one.

Because only the wax near the flame liquefies, the candle self-extinguishes if it is knocked over, and the container stays clean.

How long does candle sand burn?

Burn time depends on how much sand you use and how many wicks you light. The Candledust pack sizes give the following approximate totals:

Is candle sand safe?

• Self-extinguishing. The pearled structure means the flame goes out if the vessel is knocked over.
• Non-toxic and pet-friendly. The wax is plant-based and clean-burning. As with any candle, keep it out of reach of pets and children while lit.
• CLP-compliant. Colourants and fragrances comply with EU CLP regulation, and Safety Data Sheets are available for every product.
• Paraffin-free. No petroleum-derived wax, no parabens, and up to 80% less soot than a paraffin candle.
• Correct vessel matters. Always use a non-flammable container at least 8 cm wide so the melt pool cannot reach the rim.

Can candle sand be reused?

Yes. Once a wick has burned down, a small amount of wax hardens around it. There are three ways to carry on:

• Crush the hardened wax back into powder, top it up with fresh sand and insert a new wick — the candle looks brand new.
• If enough wick remains, simply relight it as you would a normal candle.
• Remove the hardened piece and push a new wick into the remaining powder.

Wicks themselves are reusable and can be relit several times, and the sand can be poured into a different container whenever you want to change the look.

Scented and unscented candle sand

Candle sand is available both scented and unscented. Unscented sand gives a clean, neutral burn and can be personalised with your own essential or fragrance oils; scented blends are pre-fragranced during manufacturing. What is candle sand made of?
